There are thousands of spider species in Australia, many of which are harmless to humans. However, there are some extremely venomous and toxic spiders that can potentially cause great harm to humans.
Although pest control is the safe solution to ongoing spider infestation, if you or any of your staff or residents are bitten by a spider, seek immediate medical attention.
Highly dangerous and venomous spiders most commonly found in and around buildings in Australia include the Funnel-Web Spider, the Red-Back Spider and the White-tail Spider. Although less dangerous, other spiders found in Australian buildings that are still highly toxic to humans include the Mouse Spider, the Wolf Spider and the Black House Spider.
Funnel Web Spiders
The Sydney Funnel-Web Spider is one of the world’s most deadly spiders. Both the male and female carry atraxotoxin, one of the world’s most dangerous toxins. An adult male Funnel-Web is 25 millimetres in length, while the female is 30 millimetres long. Both males and female are shiny black in colour with a dark purple brown abdomens.

Red Back Spider
The Red-Back Spider can inflict a painful bite which can be fatal, especially to the young and elderly. Only a small amount of venom can cause serious illness, as the poison attacks the nervous system. Red-Back Spider size varies greatly – the male can be tiny, with the abdomen of the female growing to the size of a large pea. Red-Back Spiders do not always have a red marking.

White Tail Spider
The White-tail spider (also known as the White-tailed spider) has a bite which may cause nausea and burning pain followed by swelling and itchiness around the site of the bite. In some rare but dramatic cases, a severe allergic reaction, blistering or ulceration of the skin, similar to gangrene, has been linked to the bite of a White-tail Spider.

How can you tell if you have a spider infestation in or around your hospital, aged care or child care premises?
Spiders do not tend to infest or colonise premises, although many do wander inside during rainy weather or due to disturbance of their habitat. Spiders have also been known to enter buildings after taking shelter in in washing baskets, shoes and clothing. They may also enter your premises through the luggage, clothing or shoes of your residents, staff and visitors.
If you see a spider or spiders in or near your premises, it is advisable to seek professional advice in order to deal with the threat in safe manner. Identify the spider if possible using this chart, and under no circumstances should you attempt to catch or kill a venomous spider yourself.
How to keep spiders under control in your hospital, aged care or child care premises
Business owners can advise staff, residents, patients and visitors to take a few simple steps to minimise the chance of spiders entering buildings:
- Do not leave footwear outside overnight.
- Exercise caution when moving or storing items or boxes on the ground in external storage areas, sheds and underground parking areas, and when moving stored items in sheds and garages.
- Avoid leaving laundry, linen and bedding on the ground, and take care when handling items that have been left outside.
- Keep windows and doors securely screened.
- Wear strong gloves when handling waste (although some spiders have bites that can penetrate these).
If you or any of your staff, residents, patients or visitors are bitten by a spider, seek immediate medical attention.
