Bed bugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. A number of adverse health effects may result from bed bug bites, including skin rashes, psychological effects, and allergic symptoms.
The presence of bed bugs may cause itching and loss of sleep. Sometimes the itching can also lead to excessive scratching, which may increase the chance of a secondary skin infection.
Bed bugs are not known historically to transmit any pathogens as disease vectors, however recent research suggests they may carry a parasite that could cause serious disease.
Adult bed bugs are light brown to reddish-brown, flattened, oval-shaped, and have no hind wings. Bed bugs have segmented abdomens with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. Adults grow to 4–5 millimetres long and 1.5–3 millimetres wide.
Newly hatched bedbugs are translucent, lighter in colour, and become browner as they moult and reach maturity. A bed bug of any age that has just consumed a blood meal has a bright red, translucent abdomen, fading to brown over the next several hours, and to opaque black within two days as the insect digests its meal.
Bed bugs may be mistaken for other insects, such as booklice, small cockroaches, or carpet beetles; however, when warm and active, their movements are more ant-like and, like most other true bugs, they emit a characteristic disagreeable odour when crushed.

How can you tell if you have a bedbug infestation in your Real Estate Strata premises?
Certain signs and symptoms suggest the presence of bed bugs. Often the first sign is when bites occur.
Other signs include rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses, dark spots on sheets, mattresses and bedding, and the presence of tiny eggs and eggshells. Finding the adult insects confirms the diagnosis.
How to keep bedbugs under control in your Real Estate Strata premises
Once bed bugs are found, there is very little that can be done other than to contact professional pest controllers.
However, as they are often brought into a residence by people who may have recently travelled overseas and may have attached themselves to luggage, clothing or any bedding the traveller may have carried, these should be carefully inspected to minimise the chance of an infestation.
Simply buying new mattresses and linens will not get rid of bed bugs, as rooms have to be professionally treated to remove the bugs and eggs.
