Do you have an ant problem or infestation in your home?
There are thousands of ant species in Australia, although only a few are considered pests or present problems for homeowners.
Ants can damage and short-circuit electrical components, and can transfer viral, fungal and bacterial plant diseases from the insects they feed on. Ants may also contaminate foodstuffs and cause allergic reactions if an individual is bitten or stung. They can also undermine root systems in plants and cause damage to pathways, landscaping and garden beds.
Several species of ant are usually found inside homes in Australia. Of those, the most common include the Black House ant and the Ghost ant.
The Black House ant is shiny and black, and is 2.5-3 millimetres long. They scavenge in kitchens, garbage and also dog excrement, therefore potentially spreading diseases such as salmonella.
The Ghost ant
The Host ant has pale/translucent legs and abdomen and is 1.6 millimetres long. It nests indoors in small spaces and wall voids and outdoors in flowerpots, under objects on the ground and in loose bark. As these ants are attracted to high moisture areas, they can be found in kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Ghost ant
Ants that commonly cause damage to gardens and colonise exterior structures in Australia are the Coastal Brown ant and the Garden ant.
The Coastal Brown ant is yellowish-brown and around 1.5-2.5 millimetres long. They nest in soil and build along pathways around the house including gardens and walls, and can excavate leaving mounds along foot paths and other areas that are unsightly.

Coastal brown ant
The Garden ant is dark brown to black in colour, and is approximately 4-5 millimetres long. They follow well–defined trails around food sources, and are attracted to sweet foods. They nest outdoors in soil and below paving slabs on the sunny side of buildings.

How can you tell if you have an ant infestation in your home?
Internally, the most obvious sign is the appearance of ants in and around food preparation areas. You may see large numbers of live ants in or around your home, or they may be found in your cupboards, bathroom or food storage areas. Some species of ant may also nest inside walls or other quiet, dark places, which may make them harder to detect.
